Looking at leadership through the Peace Circle — not a political statement, but a mirror

The Peace Circle isn't politics — it's a mirror. It reflects the impact of leaders on people and nature, through the values of heart, head, and hands. While the examples here are necessarily drawn from political actions, the purpose isn't to take sides in political debate, but to reflect on how leadership aligns — or doesn't — with universal human and planetary values. Here's what we see.

❤️ Heart — Hope, Love, Justice

Trump’s leadership gives hope to some and takes it away from many. His tone and conduct — often rude, mocking, and divisive — damage love and trust between people, leaving deep scars in communities and families. His disregard for justice shows in his selective compassion: he ignores the suffering of Gaza, oversees the Zero Tolerance immigration policy that separated over 5,400 children from their parents, and ordered a bombing of Iranian nuclear sites in June 2025, widely condemned as an unlawful act of war.

For nature, his policies consistently reject love for the planet — he dismisses climate change as a “hoax,” maintains the withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, and opens millions of acres of protected lands for drilling and exploitation. There is little hope offered to future generations when it comes to preserving the earth.

On the level of society and the world, President Trump's so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill,” a sweeping new tax and spending reform signed into law on July 4, 2025, has been widely analyzed to disproportionately benefit wealthier taxpayers, while poorer households are projected to see a decrease in resources due to reductions in social safety net programs. This reform is also projected to add several trillions of dollars to the national debt over the coming decade.

💡 Head — Knowledge, Science, Wisdom

Trump shows a sharp tactical mind and an unmatched instinct for grabbing attention. But wisdom? Wisdom requires humility, listening, and learning from mistakes — qualities rarely evident in his leadership. His use of disinformation, denial of science, and attacks on the press undermine the very foundations of knowledge in a democracy. He also threatened to cut funding to Harvard and to expel foreign students, and moved to restrict USAID support. As a result of these USAID cuts, millions of children in developing countries face death and the loss of basic services such as healthcare and education.

For nature, his climate denialism is a deliberate rejection of decades of evidence. Wisdom about our interconnectedness with the earth is drowned out by short-term economic and political gain.

On the global stage, his thinking is driven more by dominance than by balance or foresight — he often wins the moment at the cost of the future. He uses tariffs as a blunt tool, plays games with trade barriers, and treats Europe with disdain, undermining long-standing alliances in pursuit of short-term advantage.

🙌 Hands — Protecting Life, Balance, Diversity

In the Peace Circle, the hands ask: what do you do with your power? Do your actions protect life, create balance, and honor diversity?

Here, too, Trump falls short. His policies strip protections from vulnerable people and ecosystems. His rhetoric deepens social divides rather than healing them. Balance is replaced by confrontation. His treatment of the media and checks on his power shows a disregard for democratic diversity — concentrating authority in himself.

In nature, diversity and balance are also sacrificed for profit and speed. Forests, species, and climate systems continue to suffer under his ongoing administration as president.

🌳 The Hope Tree Still Lives

Peace Circle reminds us what is still possible: leadership that nurtures hope, seeks wisdom over dominance, and uses hands to heal rather than divide.

Even in Trump’s park — cracked soil, rigid walls, and flashing plastic trees — the Hope Tree is still alive. Its roots hold on quietly, waiting for care, water, and light. Such a park can still be replanted — one tree, one choice at a time.

This isn’t about condemnation, but about asking: what kind of legacy do we all want to leave behind? The Peace Circle reminds us: where values grow, peace follows.

In Trump’s park, the earth still breathes — and the Hope Tree still lives.
