🌿✨ “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” This ancient Chinese proverb perfectly captures my 20-year journey of planting trees for peace. As I approach my 60th birthday, I am more excited than ever about the future, particularly with the launch of the Peace Circle™ Park.
A Journey of Two Decades
In 2004, I was interviewed by Inter Press Service about our first ENO Tree Planting Day For Peace, to promote peace through environmental action. That moment was a turning point, solidifying my belief that every tree planted can make a difference. Today, that belief has blossomed into a global movement, with the Peace Circle™ taking it to new heights.
The journey has had its ups and downs. In 2011, after a big forest conference we organized, my mother passed away. Planting a tree in her memory was a deeply personal moment for me. Later, when my idol Wangari Maathai passed away, I felt like I had lost two mothers. Despite these losses, I was determined to continue our mission. And we planted over 30 million trees for peace in 157 countries!
I've had the honor of planting trees with three Finnish presidents and received numerous international awards. Each recognition has reinforced the importance of our work.
The Genesis of Peace Circle™ I have always been fascinated by geometric forms, particularly the circle. A circle symbolizes unity, gathering, and protection. While we had established peace parks before, I felt something was missing. I wanted these parks to be more educational, enjoyable, and multi-purpose, catering not only to education but also to communities, visitors, and tourists. I envisioned how the Peace Circle™ would look from the air and space, leading me to start sketching the concept and shape of the Peace Circle™, creating a unique and innovative design. Innovative Concept for Urban Environments
The Peace Circle™ concept is revolutionary. It is compact and suitable for urban environments, multi-purpose, combining physical and digital learning, and designed to engage communities through music and other activities. Each Peace Circle™ sends a visual message of peace, with parks forming peace symbols visible from space. My goal is to see Peace Circle™ parks established in 100 countries before I retire in five years.
Combining Physical and Digital Learning
The Peace Circle™ is designed to be a multi-purpose space that combines physical and digital learning. It serves as an educational tool for schools and communities, promoting environmental stewardship and peacebuilding.
Not naive but optimistic
While I am passionate about peace, I am not naive. Finland, like many other countries, must be prepared to defend itself in these uncertain times, especially with the ongoing war in Ukraine. However, I firmly believe that grassroots efforts in communities and international cooperation can lay the foundation for lasting peace. Combining our respect and love for nature with concrete actions is the perfect match.
Looking Forward: Launching the First Peace Circle™ Park
As we prepare to open the first Peace Circle™ Park in Finland this fall, I am more motivated than ever. The exact location will remain a secret until September, adding to the excitement. Imagine a world where Peace Circle™ parks spread across the globe, forming a network of hope, unity, and sustainability.
Yet, the journey hasn't been without its challenges. As I mentioned in an interview 20 years ago, "As they say, a prophet has no recognition in his own land. Even though I may have the world in my hands, it doesn’t impress the decision-makers. Everyone says it is a good idea, but as soon as talk of money enters the equation, people turn their faces away."
Join the Movement Despite these obstacles, the vision remains clear and steadfast. Join me on this incredible journey. Let’s cultivate peace and nurture nature together.
